When the chips are down, it’s easy to turn to the ‘quick fix’, tried and tested rewards – chocolate, alcohol, actual chips… wonderful things which help right now, but aren’t always great commitments to our future selves.
I’d be lying if I said I didn’t sometimes turn to those things (a time-restricted wallow in self-pity, followed by some very buttery toast usually does it), but I also try really hard to make more lasting changes so that I can avoid the events or reactions which have caused the low-mood.
There are times when I absolutely cannot do this on my own. That’s when I turn to my friends; the ones who will tell me when I’m wallowing unhealthily and need to start moving on. Sometimes it’s a message I don’t want to hear, but I know they’ve got my back, want me to feel better and will help me to do so.
