February 2021

Welcome to this month’s Brolly Good Ideas newsletter.

Keep on keeping on!

Although social distancing and other closure measures are going to be with us for a good while yet, it does feel that there’s genuine light at the end of the tunnel (let’s hope it’s not another train, anyway!). We might not yet be able to make concrete plans, but the days are getting noticeably longer and the first bulbs are starting to show.

Physical fitness

One-to-one coaching and personal training can still take place in public spaces. I can offer general fitness, flexibility and strength, as well as specialist running coaching. Training plans and electronic catch ups are also available you’re further afield or don’t want individual sessions. Please get in touch if you’d like a no-obligation chat about your training.

Stretch and Relax – for the educators

Life with little ones must be pretty tough at the moment (it’s not all smiles and sunshine without, to be honest!). On Monday afternoons, at 4pm, I’m offering 30-minutes of stretching and relaxation for anyone involved in education. Whether you’re a teacher, TA, head, parent ‘enjoying’ home-schooling – everyone’s welcome! Find out more here.

Running – Tilehurst Runs Together

Run Strong and Run BAGS (backs, abs, glutes and stretch) continue via Zoom on Tuesday and Thursday evenings respectively (each have an on-demand facility via Facebook, too). They’re suitable for all, with plenty of options, regardless of your current fitness level and I promise you’ll feel better for joining us!

What is Pilates?

Do you actively think about how to move your body before you move it? Do you link your thoughts to your movements?

Pilates is a method of teaching movement which links the brain and the body via the breath, so that movements happen exactly as they should. In Pilates sessions, participants concentrate on the body and breath so that they make accurate neural connections, moving with precision. The first part of each session focuses on centering (yep, that spelling!), ensuring that the main stabilising areas of the body are working well, ready to support the flowing, controlled movements of the limbs.

Thank you so much to those who offered to help with my Pilates qualification. I’m taking these taster sessions for the whole of February and will be offering classes as soon as I’ve passed my assessment.

And finally…

How’s your New Year’s Resolution going?

I love Liz Climo!

Being a cheerleader

I recently asked my athletes to describe themselves as a runner: determined, enthusiastic, keen and motivated were common responses. It was so pleasing to see them be so positive about their own running, even after a year of few opportunities to test themselves. I’m really glad that they can cheer themselves on, recognising their capabilities…

“What a year this month’s been!”

January 2021… In the UK, the country descended into a terrible parody of itself, combining Carry On with Hammer Horror and a thoroughly significant sprinkling of Ken Loach. Schools opened fully, then closed THE NEXT DAY to everyone except the children of essential workers and those considered vulnerable. The death-toll from COVID-19 reached record levels…

Effort

Everyone’s trying their best. It might not look like it, you might not notice, but they are. This isn’t a competition about who’s trying hardest or doing the most, we’re all doing what we can right now. Is that always true?
